At the end of the 1950s, a business concept was created at the Stockholm Student Union. The idea was that student housing that stood vacant during the summer months would be let as hotel rooms. The business was driven successfully through a foundation-like organisation during the 1970s. In 1980, the business was transformed into a corporation,SSRS Holdings AB – with Bicky Chakraborty at the helm.

Three years later, the prestigious Hotel Savoy in Malmö was acquired and the march towards today’s quality profile had begun. Since 1991, the organisation has been run under the name, Elite Hotels of Sweden. The sole owner is Bicky Chakraborty. 


The story of SSRS originates in the Stockholm Student Union. The goal was to create an international centre for Swedish and overseas students. This was made possible when the international student dorm Forum was built. The centre was inaugurated by the Education Minister at that time, and future Prime Minister, Ingvar Carlsson. Bicky Chakraborty was the centre’s founder and initiator of the undertaking.

In 1980, the corporation SSRS Holding AB (Stockholm Student Reception Service) was formed as a wholly-owned subsidiary of SSSB. In 1983, the stately Hotel Savoy in Malmö was acquired, which was the beginning of SSRS’ history as an independent operation.

as an independent operation. By January 1985, the corporation’s substantial growth meant that a different ownership structure would be required. Bicky Chakraborty took over ownership of SSRS from SSSB along with two listed companies, AB Aritmos and Skrinet AB. Ownership has changed several times over the years and was unstable until the end of 1998. Since January 1999, Bicky Chakraborty has had 100% ownership. There was, for a time, a tendency to tear down all the old city hotels in the country in order to build modern hotels similar to American motels. The company’s mission was to acquire and refine traditional family-run city hotels and guest houses. Run with a strong sense of commitment and a good understanding of financials, the hotels have become profitable and this has subsequently afforded the opportunity to undertake careful restorations and refurbishment.

Current Operations

The company’s name (from April 1991) is under the name Elite Hotels of Sweden AB. Elite Hotels is the largest privately owned hotel chain in Sweden with a total of 34 facilities in 23 cities, with 29 Elite Hotels in 18 cities and 5 Hotel Bishops Arms in 5 cities.


Elite Hotels works toward and supports positive and sustainable societal development. Among other things, sustainable development means that present and future generations are ensured a good and healthy environment. For this reason, we have elected to certify all of our existing and future hotels with the global Green Key Eco-Rating.

We strive to offer products and services with the lowest possible environmental impact, all while retaining high quality and a great customer experience. We endeavour to continuously improve our work in all pertinent areas such as energy, water, resource consumption, and chemical and waste management, so as to reduce our impact on the environment.

Elite Hotels works to increase competence, commitment and responsibility amongst our employees and guests, so that we can create a truly eco-conscious company together. As a part of this work, we systematically inform our employees and guests about our progress, and we ensure that everyone participates in our environmental work by having clear routines and regular training. We prioritise suppliers who are environmentally certified and who work actively with sustainability.


Energy Consumption

  • We use 100% green electricity which has the Bra Miljöval eco-label (Good Environmental Choice).
  • We constantly review our energy use and record consumption on a monthly basis.
  • Work pertaining to renewable energy and the environment is under way at every one of our hotels based on the specific circumstances at each property.
  • Low-energy lamps/LED lights are used wherever possible and we are phasing out our older lights.
  • All spaces are ventilated according to need.
  • Our hotels are by and large equipped with automatic lighting and presence sensors.
  • Heat is recirculated from the ventilation system, cooling units, and waste water.
  • Energy-efficiency at all our hotels is optimally maintained through the replacement of fans and control systems.

Water Consumption

  • Standard toilets have been replaced with low-flush toilets wherever this has been possible.
  • Hotel rooms have special water-saving taps and showers.
  • Information on how to clean laundry and dishes using the least amount of water is clearly conveyed on all dishwashers and washing machines.
  • Our housekeeping staff are trained on an ongoing basis on how to reduce water consumption.

Waste Management

  • We sort our waste to the greatest extent possible and strive to minimise the amount of unsorted waste.
  • We strive to sort food waste, glass, waste paper (newspapers/magazines), paper packaging (cardboard), hard-plastic packaging, metal packaging, electronic waste (e.g. light sources), hazardous waste (e.g. batteries).
  • We control and restrict the use of disposable items.

Washing and Cleaning

  • The cleaning agents and washing powders we use in our day-to-day operations are all environmentally certified.
  • Staff are trained to use appropriate quantities of these cleaning agents.
  • The laundries we use are certified in accordance with ISO 14001 and by Tvätteriförbundet (The Swedish Laundry Association).

Food and Consumables

  • The cleaning agents and washing powders we use in our day-to-day operations are environmentally certified.
  • We offer vegetarian alternatives.
  • Disposable packaging is being gradually phased out to the greatest extent possible.
  • We procure local produce and ingredients.
  • We limit unnecessary transportation by means of prudent logistics.
  • Toilet paper, kitchen towels, paper towelling and other paper products are environmentally certified.
  • Our letter paper, writing paper and other office paper are environmentally certified.

Staff & Guests

  • Our staff are kept updated and informed so as to increase their knowledge of and commitment to our environmental work.
  • We inform our guests about our environmental work, both at the hotels and online.
  • Our staff are happy to provide guests with tips and advice on how they can support our environmental work while staying with us.
